History
The Department of the Theory and History of the State and Law was officially founded in 1944 when, after a fourteen year break, the Faculty of Law was again restored at the university. However, lectures on the history and theory of law were taught at the university since the founding of Saint Petersburg Imperial University, first in the Department of Legal and Philosophic Sciences and, starting in 1836, at the Faculty of Law. In 1863, the faculty was divided into 13 departments. The Departments of the Encyclopedia of Law, History of Russian Law, History of Legislation, and the History of Slavic Legislation are considered as the historical predecessors to the modern Department of the Theory and History of the State and Law.
Today, the faculty conducts academic and research work and prepares specialists in all departments and forms of study at the Law of Faculty on the following major topics:
- Theory of State and Law
- History of State and Law
- History of Political and Legal Thought
There are 8 academic circles in the faculty.
