Mhe Chair of Criminal Law has a long and rich history, originating from the first third of the 18th century. A.P.Kunitsyn, P.D.Lodiy, Y.I.Barshev, N.S. Tagantsev, P.I. Lublinskiy, M.D.Shargorodskiy and many other outstanding scientists worked here at different time. Since 1963 till 1989 the Chair was headed by Professor of Law N.A.Belyaev. Under his direction a fundamental «Course of Soviet Criminal Law»in 5 volumes has been published.

Since 1989 till 1995 the Head of the Chair was Professor of Law V.V.Orekhov. His works «Social Planning and Questions of Struggle against Criminality» and «Sociology in a Science of Criminal Law» have enjoyed wide popularity in our country. Then the Chair was headed by Professor of Law V.S.Prokhorov. He authored more than 100 best papers on the problem of the general part in Criminal Law, among them is a fundamental monograph «Crime and Criminal Liability». From 2000 till 2011 the Head of the Chair was Professor of Law, Rector of the St. Petersburg University Nikolay M. Kropachev.

At present time the Chair prepares qualified experts on Criminal Law, Penitentiary Law and Criminology.

The well-known scientists and talented lecturers, Professors of Law work at he Chair: Professor Emeritus of the St.-Petersburg State University, former Dean of the Faculty V.S.Prokhorov; Professor of Law, judge of the Constitutional Court of Russia A.I. Boytsov and many others. Among the lecturers of the Chair are Professor of Law V.I. Poludnyakov, Associate Professor, Vice-rector of St. Petersburg State University, Acting Head of the Chair V.V. Lukyanov, Associate Professor I.V. Volgareva, Associate Professor N.I. Pryakhina, Associate Professor N.S. Shatikhina and others.
